Why should the Roxborough Greenbelt be protected?
There is an intrinsic value to urban greenspaces: they provide valuable habitat for native flora and fauna; they contribute to human physical and mental health; they improve air and water quality.
In Sudbury, a lot of work has been done to reclaim and revegetate land damaged from the long history of mining and smelting. In this context, a healthy natural urban greenspace has even more value.
The Roxborough Greenbelt has some attributes that make it especially well suited to be saved as a public natural park:
*This greenspace has become an important part of the character of this neighbourhood, and is valued by residents for its beauty, and as a wonderful place to walk and play, contributing to quality of life and healthy living.
*This greenspace plays the role of a valuable natural park right in the centre of the city, with established footpaths connecting to the Trans Canada Trail and the Junction Creek Waterway Park.
*This greenspace provides many services: e.g. improved air quality, reduced run-off to storm sewers and Junction Creek, moderation of extreme temperatures, and noise buffer.
*This greenspace provides important habitat for native plants and wildlife, including at least one endangered species (the Peregrine Falcon).
This greenspace is worth preserving!
