A solution

Friends of the Roxborough Greenbelt proposed that the City of Greater Sudbury should come to an agreement with Dalron to acquire as much of the land as possible as a public natural park.

This solution recognizes both the rights of the landowner and the value of the land as greenspace and public parkland.

Council approval was given for an agreement to protect the greenbelt in its entirety in the spring of 2007.

A key part of the agreement was a community contribution of $50,000, organized by Friends of the Roxborough Greenbelt.  This commitment was fulfilled in the spring of 2008.  Final Council approval of the agreement was given that summer.  The agreement also included a land exchange, and tax credits.

The real estate transaction closed March 30, 2009, passing the land to public ownership  and completing the goal of protecting the Roxborough Greenbelt as public greenspace.

The Roxborough Greenbelt is now a natural park.

Friends of the Roxborough Greenbelt can now focus on stewardship.
