* Easter Monday - neighbourhood Easter egg hunt
* June - Between a work day by Lo-Ellen's student environmental club, a neighbourhood workday (followed by a potluck), and additional work by residents, approximately 40 big garbage bags of the invasive species Purple Jewelweed was removed from the greenbelt, near the creek. With about 1 person hour per bag, that is a lot of volunteer work! We made quite a dent in the jewelweed, but will need to continue the job for the next few springs. Thank-you to the Junction Creek Stewardship Committee for their help, and to the city for picking up the bags. A clean-up was also done.
* October 17 - In the morning, willow shoots were collected near the Maley Dam, and in the afternoon, about a dozen people came out to bundle them up into willow fascines and dig them into the creek bank. A big thank-you to Ersin, who came out early Sunday morning to collect the willows, and donated the use of his truck to bring them back to the greenbelt. Also, a big thank-you to Junction Creek Stewardship Committee, who led us, brought along all the equipment, and taught us all what to do. And, of a course, a big thank-you to everyone who came out to help get it done! We made 9 willow fascines, and dug them along ~ 40 metres of the creek bank. If you are walking along the trail right along the creek, you may see the willow shoots sticking up near the water line - these are holding in the willow bundles. If all goes well, the willows will root up in the spring and produce new shoots, holding the bank steady and preventing further erosion. We plan to do it all again next fall, to continue along the bank.
